Bleached Waratah

Here is the last card that I showed at the Sydney Regional Training event.

I have stamped the waratah in staz on black in on riding hood red card, then bleached the leaves using my aquapainter filled with bleach. 

I have also torn the edges of the card and rubbed them along my disposable bleach stamp pad to highlight them.

I have used crystal effects on the waratah flower to make it shiny, and to match I used a 'build a brad' with a 1/2 inch circle of riding hood red card, that I had spritzed with bleach, under the shiny bubble.

The background of the card is also spritzed with bleach using my bleach filled aquapainter and colour spritzer tool.

Another Card Using Bleach

Here is another of the projects I shared with Stampin' Up! demonstrators at the recent Sydney Regional Training event at Darling Harbour.  Don't worry, I only have 1 more tomorrow then I will be finished!

It is a second card using bleach to colour in the image, then Stampin' Pastels to add colour back to the image.  I have used another image from the "Bloomin' with beauty" stamp set:

I added the colour back to the centres of the flowers, the leaves and at the base of the vase.  I also used bleach to outline the vase so it 'pops' out of the card.

This was quite a lot easier than watercolouring the image (in my humble opinion!)

Adding Colour Back to Bleached Images

Now you can colour in with bleach (see previous posts) you may want to try this:  Adding colour back to your bleached out image using Stampin' Pastels (otherwise known as chalks!)

Simply stamp your image with Staz on black ink, colour it with bleach, then apply your stampin' pastels diectly over the image.  The stampin' pastels do not react with the bleach - how cool is that!  You can add colour to your image where ever you require it.

Here is the card I created using this technique:

I coloured the flower with bleach and applied the stampin' pastels to certain areas of the flower to add highlights and depth to the flower.  I also added colour to the stem of the flower.

Bleach Colour Chart

Here is the colour chart I created using all the Stampin' Up! card colours.  I stamped them all with fresh bleach so you can see the reaction they all have:

You can see clearly from this chart that bleach reacts differently with each colour. 

Some colours give a great reaction and turn perfectly white when stamped with bleach eg pretty in pink, sage shadow, pale plum, brocade blue, regal rose, perfect plum.

Some colours give a yellow bleached image eg old olive, certainly celery, mellow moss, more mustard and really rust.

Some colours only react slightly and so don't give a nice contrasting image eg real red, apricot appeal, summer sun, pixie pink, lavendar lace.

And some colours don't react at all to bleach eg black, cameo coral, bashful blue, blush blossom, pink passion.
 
I hope this will assist you when you try stamping and colouring in with bleach on your cards and papercraft projects.

Green Kangaroo!

I experimented with colouring in with bleach quite a bit before my presentation to the demonstrators at the Stampin' Up! Sydney Regional Training.  I discovered that using bleach is not an exact science!

This is a great example:  I decided to colour in the kangaroo from the 'Build a roo' stamp set with bleach(I love this set!)  I chose chocolate chip card and the kangaroo was so easy to colour with the bleach - it gave him a nice tan colour. 

Then I decided that I would like to use my new Circle Scissors Plus ( A NEW TOOL AVAILABLE IN THE SUMMER MINI CATALOGUE FROM 1 DECEMBER!) to cut out my kangaroo.  But I had used too small a piece of card.  I opened a new packet of chocolate chip card and coloured the image again.  This time my kangaroo turned GREEN!  Certainly celery to be precise!  I still used him to create a card:

 This illustrates that you need to experiment with using bleach with cardstock and choose your colours carefully. 

Some card colours react better than others with bleach.  Some are consistent performers like pretty in pink and sage shadow.  While other colours are temperamental like chocolate chip.  Some colours just don't like to join in the fun at all, like pink passion, cameo coral and so saffron. 

To assist you in choosing card colours that react well with bleach I created a colour chart of all of the stampin' Up! cardstock colours and stamped them with bleach.  Check back tomorrow to see my chart.

Upsy Daisy with Markers

 

Here is a simple card I made some time ago to demonstrate the use of Stampin' Write Markers on stamps.

I used 4 different markers: old olive, summer sun, pumpkin pie and ruby red.  They are all colours from the Earth Elements pack of Stampin' Write markers.  I used the paint brush end of the marker to 'draw' directly onto the rubber of the stamp.  If you use this technique you can put the ink where you want it and so create the effect you see above when you stamp onto your card.

Versamark Resist Pick a Petal Card

This is a card that was inspired by a very similar card by Cassandra Grambau - Thanks Cass! 

I have used the versamark resist technique to create this multicoloured flower.  A simple yet effective technique.

First stamp your image in versamark ink on white glossy cardstock, then either wait for it to dry, or dry with a heat tool.  Next use sponge daubers to apply dye ink to the images.  The versamark will 'resist' the ink and remain white. 

In the example above I have used the outline petal from the 'pick a petal' stamp set and used groovy guava, tempting turquoise, lovely lilac, rose red and pink passion as the petal colours. A greeting from 'short and sweet' becomes the basis of the stem for the flower with a bit of paper piercing using the Stampin' Up! mat pack to extend it to the edge of the card. Finally a rhinestone brad is the perfect addition to the flower centre, mount on black then on groovy guava.

Season of Joy Magnetic Bookmark!

This is the third and final make and take that the guests at my Spring Mini Catalogue Launch Party got to make (for free!).  A magnetic bookmark!  Read on to find out how it works!

I used the new Season of Joy stamp set to make this bookmark.  It is a Christmas set but can be used in a non-Christmassy way, as I have shown!

To make this book mark you need a long strip of card folded in half.  You attach 2 flat magnets to the inside base of the card.  These magnets will hold the bookmark in place when folded over your page.  The ribbon will stick out the top of your book to mark your place!  Here is a photo of the magnets so you can see what I mean:

You use the Stampin' Up! horizontal slot punch to punch the small slots for the ribbon to go through.  I have also used my Stampin' Write bashful blue marker to colour the edge of my white ribbon to give it a lift before threading it through the slots and tying in the front.

I have also added some detail with my paper piercing template from the Stampin' Up! mat pack to the corners of the white card and on some of the swirls too.

Rock 'n' Roll Technique

 

Here is a card I created quickly using the Rock 'n' Roll Technique to give me two toned flowers.

To try the rock n roll technique yourself:  you choose two coordinating colours of classic ink.  Ink your stamp in the lighter colour.  Then roll the edges of your stamp in the darker colour of ink.  Fianlly you stamp the image onto cardstock for a two-toned effect.

 

This technique works best with circular stamps or stamps that are symmetrical.  You can also vary the amount of the darker colour you add to your stamp with the amount of pressure you use.

How to Kiss with your Stamps!

Have you ever tried kissing your stamps?  Of course I don't mean in the usual way, that would be weird!, but in the following way:

 

Kissing Technique: 

Ink a background stamp with classic ink.  Press a solid type stamp onto the background stamp to pick up the ink and then onto cardstock.  You can also press inked stamps onto a background stamp and then stamp either stamp for an interesting effect. 

 

On the card pictured I have kissed a bold solid flower stamp, from the 'pick a petal' stamp set, onto the 'paisley background' stamp and then stamped it onto the card.  I used my Stampin' Write markers to 'ink' the background stamp in different places so I could use different colours.  Here is the completed card:

Happy Birthday Meg!

It is my good friend Meg's birthday today.  Can you guess how old she is?  Hope you have a great day Meg.

This is her card.  I hope she likes it.  I made it so the 40th embellishment looks like a winners ribbon.  I think you are a winner if you make it to 40!  (I'll be there soon enough)

This card is inspired by Marelle Taylor, It is my take on her 'no cutting card'.  Thanks Marelle.

I also tried something new - Colouring my ribbon to match the card. I have coloured the vanilla ribbon by using perfect plum ink.  This is the ribbon you see beneath the '40' circle.  I used the sponge daubers to apply the ink to the ribbon and dried it with my heat tool. 

Details:

Stamps:  Bud basics, Occasional greetings.

Card:  Natuals ivory, always artichoke, perfect plum

Ink: Perfect plum, pale plum, pretty in pink, always artichoke.

Accessories:  very vanilla 1/8th inch grosgrain ribbon, sponge daubers, stampin dimensionals.

Heat and Stick and glitter

I have been playing around with my 'heat and stick powder'! What is 'heat and stick powder' I hear you ask?  Well, it is what I used to make the glittery flower on the card above.  It is a Stampin' Up! product and great if you want to make all of your stamped image glittery easily. 

To use it you:

1.  Ink your entire image in versamark ink.  In this case I then also inked my stamp in pretty in pink classic ink too (It does transfer a little wee bit of versamark ink onto your classic ink pad, but I have never found this to be an issue).

2.  Stamp your image.

3.  Sprinkle 'heat and stick powder' on your image.

4.  Heat with a heat tool until just melted.

5.  Sprinkle dazzling diamonds glitter on the melted powder

6.  Reheat with your heat tool to set the glitter.

It's that easy!  And I think you will agree, looks super!  Any card looks better with a bit of bling!

Birthday Whimsy Card

I just love all of the Sale-a-bration stamp sets!  This is the cake from 'Birthday Whimsy' and the greeting from 'Lots of Thoughts'. 

The card is from a splitcoaststampers sketch (SC140) that I used as a challenge on a cyberstamp I helped to run last night, for the INKlings (one of the Stampin' Up! Demonstrator teams I am in!).  You had to use the sketch plus some Stampin' Up! patterned paper somewhere in your design, and take your colour scheme from the paper.

I used the Four Seasons patterned paper (for the three strips - two are cut to show all the stripes and the strip along the bottom of the card is cut at 90 degrees to the others so it shows one long stripe.)  Other colours used are bashful blue, old olive, marigold morning, bravo burgundy and whisper white.

I used the Stampin' Write Markers© to add colour to the birthday cake after inking it in marigold morning first.  And also to 'ink' up just part of the greeting stamp which actually has 4 lines of greeting on it - but I just wanted one - so I using the markers meant I didn't have to mask the others.  It makes 'Lots of Thoughts' a very versatile set with 24 greeting lines if you count them all individually!

Bud Basics Card using faux linen

Here is a card made with the new Bud Basic Stamp set and Basic Outline Jumbo wheel.  I love that I can use the jumbo wheel to stamp the outline then stamp the "insides" of the flowers using the Bud Basic stamp set!  What a great idea!

The background of this card is also made using the faux linen technique. I have used the sanding block to lightly sand the surface of glossy white cardstock in the two different directions then sponged the vintage violet ink over the top and sanded it lightly again.  Viola - faux linen!

Little girl cards

Some more cards done with the All in the Family stamp set.  Can you tell I am loving this set!  It is just so easy to make cute cards in a flash.

This time I have made little girl cards.  So she doesn't look out of proportion, I have masked her arms using a post it note over her dress to make her arms a little bit shorter. I have coloured her in using my Watercolour crayons and aquapainter®.   These are my favourite methods of colouring, which means I do have to stamp my images in Staz On® ink so the ink doesn't bleed when I watercolour.  I have also coloured around the little girl on the right hand side of the photo to make her "pop" from the page more.  Colouring under her feet is another colouring trick to "ground" her on the page, so it doesn't seem like she is floating in air!

Double mounting stamps

I thought I would share a way of making some of your stamps more versatile. Here are some pictures of stamps that I have mounted with the words and images separate on the block.

If you purchase stamps that have both images and words that are designed to go together on the block of wood - you can actually cut the words away from the image and mount it on the side of your block. This makes the stamps more versatile, in my opinion! You can then stamp the image lots of times on a card, without the words, then stamp the words just where want them, just once!

There are lots of Stampin' Up! stamp sets where this sort of mounting is possible, for instance:

Greetings galore, Figures of speech, Little hellos, Nice and Easy Notes, Taggers dozen and Very Punny (retired set, used above in picture).

It can be tricky to cut between the words and the images but I found using a very small pair of scissors or a craft knife worked well. I also bent the rubber to make the gap easier to access.

I hope this tip is useful for some of you.
